Car dent repair with Paintless Dent Removal – what is PDR and how is it done?

In this blog post we’ll talk about how paintless dent removal, or PDR for short is carried out, and how its a great for a car dent repair.

What is paintless dent removal and how does it help a car dent repair?

Paintless dent removal is a repair method used to remove dents, creases, dings and large collision damage without the need for filling and painting like a traditional bodyshop repair. There are 2 main ways dents can be removed. Dents can be pushed out from the inside of the panel, or glue pulled from the outside of the panel. Both of these methods give excellent results for a car dent repair, when performed by a professional, will leave the panel looking like there has never been any damage at all.

Pushing dents from the backside of the panel

The most common type of repair method for PDR is pushing the dents out from the back of the panel. This requires specialist tools that can be inserted through gaps in the panel to get to the back of the dent. Sometimes we remove parts of the car, such as trims or protective covers to give us direct access to the underside of the dent. This then allows us to get out tools where needed. Once we can get to the damaged area we can remove the dent. Part of the process involves tapping down. Tapping down happens on the outside of the panel, and is where we smooth out any high spots, or crowns caused by the impact. This is where we fine tune the repair to make it as smooth and flat as the dented panel originally was.

Glue pulling the dents from the outside

Glue pull repair, or GPR for short, is the repair method used to pull the dents from the outside of the panel. Specialist glue tabs are glued to the dented area, and are pulled out in a controlled manner using specialist pulling equipment. This way of dent removal is particularly affective for damage that cant be accessed on the inside, such as roof rails, some areas of a roof, and parts of the car that are double skinned. GPR also allows us to pull out really big damage smoothly and quickly with larger tabs, which would take a lot longer if they were to be pushed out. Here at Dent Detail PDR, our PDR Technician Graham is the north wests Keco UK Brand Ambassador. Keco are at the forefront of glue pulling technology, and supply the latest GPR tooling and innovations, to improve efficiency and effectiveness for glue pull repairs

Why choose PDR for your car dent repair?

Paintless dent removal is the quickest, cleanest and most efficient way to remove dents from the panels of your car. As there is no sanding, filling and re-painting, your car is left 100% original, which has a huge benefit on re-sale value. If you came to sell your car and it had previous poor paint and filler work, it can sink and look poor, which will negatively affect the value of it. PDR leaves no trace of repair, as the panel is expertly restored without affecting or disturbing the paintwork, it will look as if it was never damaged!

How long does a typical car dent repair take?

A typical dent repair can take between 20 minutes to an hour for a small 10p sized dent. The most common type of dent you’ll find will be on a door, where another car door has dented it. These are usually straightforward to access, down the window gap and open on the inside. Dents on bodylines or swage lines take longer expectedly, and larger damage can take several hours. All dents are different, so we price and allocate time upon inspection of your particular dent.
