What Is PDR?

What is paintless dent repair?

Paintless dent repair (PDR) is a method of removing dents, dings, and creases from a vehicle's bodywork without the need for paint, filler, or replacement panels. A trained technician uses specialist tools to massage the metal back to its original shape from behind the panel, preserving the factory paint finish entirely.

DIY dent repair kits vs professional PDR — what actually works? →

How does paintless dent repair work?

A PDR technician gains access to the back of the damaged panel, usually by removing a trim piece or working through a gap. Using precision rods and levers, the technician applies carefully controlled pressure to the rear of the dent, gradually coaxing the metal back to its original position. A PDR light board is used throughout to reflect light across the panel and reveal any remaining imperfections.

Is paintless dent repair as good as traditional bodywork?

For dents where the paint is undamaged, PDR produces results that are equal to or better than traditional bodywork. There is no risk of colour mismatch, no filler that can crack or shrink over time, and no repainting that could diminish the factory finish. PDR preserves the original paint, which is always preferable from a quality and resale value standpoint.

What types of dent can be fixed with PDR?

PDR is suitable for most dents where the paint surface is intact: car park dings, door dents, minor collision damage, shopping trolley impacts, and hail damage. It works well on round dents, shallow creases, and large low-crown damage. The key requirement is that the paint has not been cracked, scraped, or compromised by the impact.

Full guide: which dents can be fixed with PDR? →

What dents cannot be repaired without paint?

Dents where the paint has cracked, chipped, or split cannot be repaired with PDR alone. Very sharp creases at the extreme edge of a panel, damage where the metal has been stretched excessively, and dents adjacent to structural welds may also require conventional repair. A honest assessment is always provided – if a dent is beyond PDR, we say so clearly.

Will PDR work on aluminium panels?

Yes, PDR can be performed on aluminium panels, though the technique differs from steel. Aluminium is softer and less elastic than steel, meaning it requires more care and different tools to avoid over-working the metal. Graham has extensive experience with aluminium-intensive vehicles including Jaguar and certain BMW and Range Rover models.

Does paintless dent repair affect my car's resale value?

PDR actively preserves resale value rather than affecting it negatively. Because the original factory paint is kept intact, there is no evidence of repair visible to a prospective buyer or vehicle history check. Traditional bodywork with resprayed panels can flag on inspection reports and reduce buyer confidence. A PDR-repaired car retains its as-new finish.

Does PDR affect your car's resale value? Full breakdown →

How long does paintless dent repair take?

Most single dents are repaired within one to two hours. Door dings and small parking dents often take under an hour. More complex repairs, such as large panels with multiple impacts or difficult access points, may take two to four hours. Hail damage across several panels is typically a full-day job. You will be given a realistic time estimate before booking.

Is PDR Right For My Dent?

My dent has a crease – can it still be repaired?

Many creases can be repaired with PDR, though the outcome depends on the severity. Shallow creases along relatively flat panel areas are usually very good candidates. Sharp, deep creases with a defined fold line are more challenging and may require additional techniques such as lateral tension or glue pulling. A photo assessment will give you an accurate answer quickly.

The dent is on a body line – is that repairable?

Dents on or very close to a body line (also called a character line or styling ridge) are among the most technically demanding repairs in PDR. They are not impossible – Graham regularly tackles body line damage that other technicians decline – but they require considerable skill and patience. The result depends on the sharpness of the crease and how far the metal has been displaced.

I have hail damage across several panels – what's involved?

Hail damage typically creates dozens or even hundreds of small round dents across the roof, bonnet, boot lid, and upper wings. PDR is the preferred repair method because it addresses each impact individually without requiring a full respray. Depending on the extent of the damage, a full hail repair can take one to three days. A detailed assessment and itemised quote will be provided.

Hail damage repair: what PDR can and cannot fix →

The dent is near the edge of a panel – can you still reach it?

Dents close to panel edges can be challenging because access from behind is restricted. In many cases the technician can remove a trim strip, rubber seal, or adjacent panel to create access. Glue pull techniques using the Keco GPR system also allow repair from the outside of the panel where rod access is impossible. Each situation is assessed individually before work begins.

My car is an EV or hybrid – is it safe to repair?

Yes, EVs and hybrids can be safely repaired with PDR. Graham holds the IMI International Level 2 Award in Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Routine Maintenance, making Dent Detail PDR one of the few PDR businesses in Lancashire and Greater Manchester with formal EV certification. Proper safe-isolation procedures are followed for every EV repair to protect both the vehicle and the technician.

I have a deep dent from a car park collision – what are my options?

A deep dent from a collision can often still be repaired with PDR, depending on whether the paint is intact. If the metal has been pushed in significantly but the surface is uncracked, a combination of rods and glue pulling can achieve excellent results. If the paint has cracked or the metal has been torn, a conventional repair will be recommended alongside a PDR pre-treatment.

The paint looks fine but the metal is pushed in – is that ideal for PDR?

Yes. An intact paint surface with a clean dent underneath is the ideal scenario for PDR. It means the full repair can be completed without any paint correction or panel replacement, and the result should be indistinguishable from undamaged bodywork. Send a photo for a quick assessment and a likely price indication.

Another company said my dent couldn't be fixed – should I get a second opinion?

Absolutely. Other PDR companies have refused jobs that Graham has subsequently repaired to a very high standard. Skill levels vary significantly across the industry, and some technicians decline challenging repairs rather than risk a poor outcome. If you have been told a dent is beyond PDR, it is always worth sending photos for an honest second assessment.

Mobile Vs Workshop

What is the difference between mobile and workshop dent repair?

Mobile repairs are carried out at your home or workplace – Graham brings all equipment to you, saving you the journey. Workshop repairs take place at the Leyland studio, which offers a controlled lighting environment, full tool access, and the ability to remove panels where necessary. Both services produce the same quality of result; the choice comes down to convenience versus access for complex repairs.

Do you come to my home or workplace?

Yes. Mobile PDR is available across a wide area of Lancashire, Greater Manchester, and Cheshire. Graham travels to wherever is most convenient for you, whether that is your driveway, your workplace car park, or a public location. There is no need to arrange alternative transport or disrupt your day. Simply text a photo of the dent to 07824426591 to get started.

Which areas do you cover for mobile repairs?

Mobile PDR is available across Leyland, Preston, Chorley, Adlington, Euxton, Fulwood, Lytham St Annes, Southport, Alderley Edge, Manchester, and the surrounding areas of Lancashire, Greater Manchester, and Cheshire. If you are unsure whether your location is covered, text a message to 07824426591 and Graham will confirm availability and travel details.

Why might I choose the workshop over mobile?

The Leyland studio offers advantages for more complex repairs. Controlled lighting conditions make it easier to detect very subtle remaining imperfections. Full access to all tools and the ability to safely remove panels and trims without working around tight spaces can improve results on difficult repairs. Reviewers consistently describe the studio as immaculate – coffee and biscuits are included.

Where is the Dent Detail PDR studio?

The Dent Detail PDR studio is based in Leyland, Lancashire. It is a dedicated paintless dent repair studio – not a general bodyshop – described by customers as spotlessly clean and run to a very high standard. Full address details are provided when booking a workshop appointment. It is easily accessible from Preston, Chorley, and the surrounding area.

Can I wait while my car is being repaired?

Yes, you are welcome to wait at the Leyland studio during your repair. Many customers do. Coffee and biscuits are provided, and the repair process is fascinating to watch if you are interested. For longer or more complex repairs, it is also perfectly fine to drop the car and collect later in the day once the work is complete.

Cost And Quotes

How do I get a quote?

Text a clear photo of the dent to 07824426591. Include a reference to the panel location and your vehicle make and model. Graham will assess the image and reply with a quote, usually the same day. There is no charge for a quote and no obligation to proceed. This is the quickest and most accurate way to get a price for your repair.

Why can't you give a price without seeing the dent first?

Every dent is different. The depth, sharpness, panel location, metal thickness, access difficulty, and condition of the paint all influence the time and technique required. A price given without seeing the dent would either be misleadingly low or unnecessarily high. A quick photo assessment takes seconds and gives you an accurate, honest quote with no surprises on the day.

Is there a call-out fee for mobile repairs?

There is no separate call-out fee for mobile repairs within the standard coverage area. The price quoted for the repair is the price you pay. For locations at the outer edge of the coverage area, any additional travel cost will be made clear in the quote before you agree to proceed. There are no hidden charges.

Is PDR cheaper than going through insurance?

In almost every case, yes. Using PDR for a small to medium dent avoids the insurance excess you would pay, protects your no-claims bonus, and prevents the premium increase that typically follows a claim. A typical PDR repair costing from £120+VAT compares very favourably to an excess of £200-£500 and potentially years of higher premiums. PDR is almost always the more economical choice.

How much does PDR cost in Lancashire? Full price guide →

Do you offer any payment options?

Payment is accepted in cash or by bank transfer on completion of the repair. There is no deposit required for standard bookings. For larger repairs or fleet work involving multiple vehicles, payment terms can be discussed at the time of quoting. All pricing is transparent and agreed in advance – there are no unexpected additions to the final bill.

Will my insurance premium go up if I use PDR?

No. PDR is a private repair, meaning no claim is made on your insurance policy. Your no-claims bonus remains intact and your insurer is not notified. Your premium is unaffected. This is one of the significant financial advantages of using PDR rather than claiming through insurance for minor to moderate dent damage.

EV And Hybrid Vehicles

Can electric vehicles be repaired with PDR?

Yes, electric vehicles can be repaired with PDR. The dent repair process itself does not interact with the battery, motor, or electrical systems. However, EV bodywork repair requires an accredited technician who understands safe-isolation procedures and the structural differences in EV construction. Graham holds the IMI EV Level 2 accreditation, one of the few PDR technicians in Lancashire to do so.

PDR on electric vehicles: why accreditation matters →

What is IMI EV accreditation and why does it matter?

The IMI International Level 2 Award in Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Routine Maintenance is an industry qualification that certifies a technician understands EV and hybrid vehicle systems, including safe-isolation procedures required before working near high-voltage components. For customers with EVs or hybrids, using an IMI-accredited technician provides confidence that the repair is being carried out safely by someone with formal training in their specific vehicle type.

Can you repair a Tesla using PDR?

Yes, Tesla vehicles are repaired regularly at Dent Detail PDR. Tesla bodywork is predominantly steel on the Model 3 and Model Y, with aluminium used in certain structural areas. Both materials can be worked with PDR. The unique challenge with Teslas is the door alignment precision required and the care needed around sensors and cameras during any panel removal.

I have a Tesla Model Y or Model 3 – do you have experience with these?

Yes. Tesla Model Y and Model 3 are among the most common EVs seen at Dent Detail PDR, and Graham has extensive hands-on experience with both. These vehicles have specific panel construction details that require familiarity – including the door panel removal process and sensor placement – all of which are well understood. Text a photo to 07824426591 for a same-day quote.

Is it safe to repair a hybrid vehicle with PDR?

Yes, hybrid vehicles are safe to repair with PDR when the technician understands the vehicle's hybrid system and follows correct safe-isolation procedures where required. Graham holds the IMI Level 2 EV and Hybrid accreditation, which covers both fully electric and hybrid vehicles. This certification is rare among PDR technicians in the North West and provides specific reassurance for hybrid vehicle owners.

Why should I use an EV-accredited PDR technician?

An EV-accredited technician has been formally trained to understand the construction, battery placement, and safe-working requirements of electric and hybrid vehicles. Choosing an unaccredited technician for your EV is an unnecessary risk – they may not be aware of high-voltage component proximity or the specific materials used in EV body construction. With Graham's IMI certification, you have documented evidence of the required expertise.

Lease, PCP And Fleet

Can PDR fix dents on a lease car?

Yes, PDR is the ideal solution for dents on a lease or PCP vehicle. Because the repair preserves the original factory paint, there is no evidence of damage visible to a leasing company inspector. A PDR-repaired panel looks identical to undamaged bodywork. Repairing dents before returning a lease car is almost always significantly cheaper than the excess damage charge applied at return.

Repairing dents on a lease car — everything you need to know →

What dents are typically charged at lease return?

Leasing companies apply the BVRLA (British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association) fair wear and tear guidelines at vehicle return. Dents larger than a 10p coin on main panels are typically charged. Creases, dents on body lines, and any damage on the bonnet, doors, or roof will usually attract charges. Multiple small dents can quickly add up to several hundred pounds in excess charges if left unrepaired.

How much could I save by repairing dents before returning my lease car?

The saving can be substantial. Leasing companies typically charge £150-£400 per panel for damage that falls outside fair wear and tear guidelines. A PDR repair for the same dent might cost from £120+VAT. On a car with three or four dents, the saving over dealer repair charges could be £400-£800 or more. The cost of a PDR assessment before return is always worth it.

Will a PDR repair be acceptable to the leasing company?

Yes. A professional PDR repair that fully restores the panel to its original condition will pass a lease return inspection. The key is that the dent must be completely resolved – not improved but still visible. Graham's repairs are carried out to a standard that routinely satisfies lease return inspections from all major leasing companies operating in the UK.

I manage a fleet – can you handle multiple vehicles?

Yes. Fleet and multiple-vehicle bookings are welcome. Graham regularly works with businesses that need several vehicles assessed and repaired, either at a single location visit or across a series of appointments. Fleet pricing can be discussed at the enquiry stage. Text 07824426591 to arrange a fleet assessment, either at your premises or at the Leyland studio.

Can you repair dents on a hire or rental vehicle?

Yes, dents on hire and rental vehicles can be repaired with PDR. Whether the damage occurred during your rental period and you are liable for the repair cost, or you are the rental company looking to restore a returned vehicle, PDR is a fast and cost-effective solution. All repairs are carried out to the same standard regardless of vehicle ownership.

Prestige And Classic Cars

Can you repair dents on a Porsche or other prestige vehicle?

Yes. Dent Detail PDR has a dedicated Porsche repair service and extensive experience with the brand, including 968 Sport and GT3 models. Prestige vehicles require particular care due to their close paint tolerances, complex panel shapes, and the exacting standards of their owners. Graham's precision approach and studio environment are well suited to high-value vehicles that deserve the best possible care.

Do you have experience with aluminium-intensive cars like Jaguar?

Yes. Aluminium-bodied vehicles including Jaguar models have been repaired at Dent Detail PDR. Aluminium requires different tooling and technique compared to steel – it is softer, less elastic, and more sensitive to over-working. The correct approach avoids metal fatigue and produces results comparable to those achievable on steel-bodied vehicles. Not all PDR technicians have the specific skills for aluminium; this is an area of established expertise here.

I have a classic car with a dent – is PDR suitable?

PDR is often the preferred method for classic cars precisely because it avoids repainting. Original factory paint on a classic car is frequently a significant part of the vehicle's provenance and value. Respraying even a single panel can reduce the car's authenticity and value to collectors. Where the original paint is intact, PDR allows the dent to be removed without any impact on the vehicle's originality.

Can you remove dents from carbon fibre panels?

Carbon fibre cannot be repaired with traditional PDR techniques – the material does not respond to massage or leverage in the way metal does. If you have a dent in what appears to be a carbon fibre panel, it is likely a carbon fibre wrap or trim over a metal substrate, which can often be repaired. True structural carbon fibre damage requires specialist composite repair. An honest assessment will clarify which situation applies.

The Process

What should I do before my PDR appointment?

Clean the area around the dent if possible – a clean surface makes it easier to assess the damage and work accurately. Ensure the car is parked in a space with enough room to open the door fully and work around the panel. For workshop appointments, simply bring the car at the agreed time. For mobile appointments, ensure there is reasonable access to the vehicle at your chosen location.

How do you access the back of the panel?

Access method depends on the panel and vehicle. For door panels, the inner trim is typically removed to expose the back of the outer skin. For bonnets and boot lids, access is usually through existing openings or by carefully lifting weather seals. For roof and pillar damage, specialist access tools may be required. In all cases, any trim removed is refitted carefully and checked before the vehicle is returned.

What is glue pull repair and when is it used?

Glue pull repair (GPR) uses specialist adhesive tabs attached to the outside of the dent to pull the metal outward from the front of the panel. It is used when access from behind is impossible or impractical, for example on bonded roof panels, certain pillar sections, and tight structural areas. GPR can also be used in combination with rod work on complex dents to achieve results that neither technique alone could produce.

What is glue pull repair and how does it work? →

What is the Keco GPR system?

Keco is a leading manufacturer of glue pull repair systems, widely regarded within the PDR industry for the quality and precision of its products. Graham is a Keco Brand Ambassador and Technical Support Technician – a role that involves both using Keco equipment at the highest level and providing technical guidance to other technicians. The Keco GPR system allows repairs on areas inaccessible to conventional PDR rods.

What happens if the paint is already cracked or chipped?

If the paint is cracked or chipped at the dent site, PDR alone cannot produce a perfect result – the crack or chip will remain even after the metal is restored. In these cases, the options are: PDR to restore the metal shape followed by a paint touch-up for the chip, or a conventional bodyshop repair where both the dent and the paint damage are addressed together. The honest recommendation depends on the extent of the paint damage.

Do you guarantee your work?

Yes. All repairs carried out by Dent Detail PDR are guaranteed. If you are not completely satisfied with the result at the time of completion, the issue will be addressed before the job is signed off. Graham's approach is straightforward: if the repair cannot be completed to the required standard, that is stated clearly before work begins, not after. The guarantee reflects confidence in the quality of every repair.

Reviews, Credentials And Trust

How many reviews does Dent Detail PDR have?

Dent Detail PDR has over 1,600 five-star Google reviews, making it one of the most highly reviewed paintless dent repair businesses in the North West of England. The reviews consistently mention Graham by name and describe specific repairs, vehicles, and outcomes – they are genuine, detailed, and reflect the consistent quality of work carried out across years of trading.

Is Dent Detail PDR IMI accredited?

Yes. Graham holds two IMI qualifications: the IMI Accredited Cosmetic Repair Technician Level 2, confirming formal competence in PDR and related cosmetic repair techniques, and the IMI International Level 2 Award in Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Routine Maintenance. The EV qualification is particularly rare among PDR technicians in Lancashire and Greater Manchester and provides specific assurance for owners of electric and hybrid vehicles.

What is a Keco Brand Ambassador?

Keco is one of the world's leading manufacturers of glue pull repair equipment, widely used by professional PDR technicians globally. A Keco Brand Ambassador is a highly experienced technician selected by Keco for their demonstrated skill with the system and their ability to support and advise other technicians. Graham also holds the role of Keco Technical Support Technician, reflecting a level of expertise that goes beyond standard professional use.

Where can I see examples of your work?

Before and after videos and photos are available on the Dent Detail PDR YouTube channel, which has more than 3,000 subscribers, and on Instagram at @dentdetailpdr. The YouTube content in particular provides an honest and detailed look at the range of repairs carried out, including complex cases, aluminium vehicles, and hail damage. Seeing the quality of work before booking is always encouraged.

How long have you been doing paintless dent repair?

The YouTube channel provides a transparent record of work carried out across a wide range of vehicles and repair types. Experience at this level – combined with formal IMI accreditation – is rare in the North West PDR market.

Tesla Dent Repair

Why do Tesla owners choose PDR over going to a Tesla Service Centre?

Tesla Service Centres typically treat dent repairs as full panel replacements, meaning new paint, longer lead times and a considerably higher cost. PDR preserves your original factory finish in a matter of hours. As IMI EV-accredited technicians, we safely power down your Tesla before any work begins, as Tesla’s own guidance requires. Dent Detail PDR is also an Approved and Verified Partner of Tesla Owners UK (teslaowners.uk), the UK's only officially recognised Tesla Owners Club.

Will PDR on my Tesla void the manufacturer’s warranty?

PDR does not void your Tesla warranty. The process uses no paint, filler, chemicals or heat on the panel surface, and a qualified technician will safely isolate the high-voltage system before starting. PDR is widely recognised as non-invasive by insurers and leasing companies, but check your individual warranty terms if you are unsure.

Tesla panels are aluminium – does that make PDR more difficult?

Aluminium is less elastic than steel and needs more careful manipulation to avoid overstressing the metal. We have extensive experience with Tesla aluminium panels and use specialist tools, including the Keco GPR glue pull system, for areas where access from behind is limited. The result is the same: a repair indistinguishable from the original factory panel.

Can you repair dents on a Tesla frunk, boot lid or door?

Yes – these are amongst the most common areas we repair on Teslas. The frunk lid and boot lid are aluminium and often require glue pull techniques due to restricted access. Doors are generally more straightforward. In most cases we achieve a finish indistinguishable from the original factory panel.

My Tesla has a wrap or matte finish – can PDR still be carried out?

PDR can be carried out on panels with a wrap or PPF (paint protection film) in most cases, provided we can access the back of the panel with our tools. The wrap or PPF will need to be partially lifted and re-laid by a specialist around the repair area. On matte or satin paint finishes, PDR is suitable provided the paint is intact – we use nothing that would affect the sheen. We will advise you clearly during the quotation.
