Damage on the roof of your car or automobile happens. We see damage on the car’s roof from ladders falling from the garage, kids standing on the roof, or people thinking that they can stand on the car without any ramifications. The truth is, you aren’t supposed to put anything on your car’s roof. While it’s made to protect you structurally from rolling your car, the bracing isn’t strong enough for you to put anything relatively heavy on the roof of your vehicle.
How do we repair dents on the roof of a vehicle? Well, this is a longer and trickier repair. This repair should be done by a technician who is well versed in dent repair. Techs vary in skill levels, and roof repair is a little more advanced because you have to gain access. Your airbags run through the roof, so if you make the wrong move, you could create an electrical nightmare.
People also modify their roofs by putting racks on to hold different accessories that sometimes fall and hit the roof, leaving dents. We can almost always fix the dent contingent on the following.
- There is no paint damage. What is paint damage, cracks, or paint missing from the area of the dent.
- The dent doesn’t interfere with the bracing. Bracing is there to protect you if you were in a car accident. If the dent has comprised the roof’s structural integrity, we, unfortunately, can not repair your roof. The only way for us to know if this is the case is to look at the roof, and sometimes we will have to drop the headliner to look at the bracing.
- The dent is not too large. There is a threshold of how big the damage can be. Unfortunately, if your entire roof is dented, we probably won’t be able to repair that, and we can refer you to a traditional body shop we know and trust.
How do we repair the roof? Very carefully! We have to gain access to the damaged area. Usually, we do this by dropping the headliner of your vehicle. This is the cloth liner that is between you and your roof. It is laborious to drop this entire thing, and sometimes we can do what we call a partial drop where we only take down part of the headliner to fix the roof. We then gently massage the dents out with fine metalwork. We use different tools to reshape the roof to the car’s original shape before the damage. We also sometimes use glue pulling, where we use a specialized type of glue to pull out and reshape the dent.
If you have roof damage, we would love to look at your car and see if paintless dent removal is a good option for you. One of the benefits of using PDR on this type of repair is there is no carfax report, and we can also repair your roof in a more timely fashion than a traditional body shop.
