Paintless Dent Repair (PDR) is a non-invasive technique for removing dents without the need for repainting or replacing the damaged panel. It can save time and money compared with traditional bodywork, but can PDR fix every type of dent?
Ultimately, PDR is highly effective, but it isn’t suitable for every dent or every area of a vehicle. The condition of the paint, depth, location and severity of the damage are all considered during an initial assessment to determine whether PDR is appropriate.
In this blog, we’ll outline everything you need to know about PDR and suitability for various dents, covering:
- What is Paintless Dent Repair?
- What types of dents can PDR fix?
- Can PDR fix deep dents?
- When might PDR not be suitable?
- Does the location of the dent matter?
- So, can PDR fix every dent?
What Is Paintless Dent Repair (PDR)?

PDR (Paintless Dent Repair) works without repainting or replacing the damaged panel. Our IMI-accredited technicians at Dent Detail PDR access the back of the panel and carefully manipulate the metal back towards its original shape.
Unlike traditional body shop repairs, PDR helps preserve the vehicle’s original factory paint and is often quicker than conventional bodywork.
For suitable damage, PDR can also be more cost-effective than traditional repairs and avoids the need for repainting and colour matching.
What Types of Dents Can PDR Fix?
At Dent Detail PDR, we have completed hundreds of dent repairs using Paintless Dent Repair techniques.
Typical examples of dents that may be suitable for PDR include:
- Small door dings.
- Medium-sized door dings.
- Parking dents.
- Minor creases.
- Hail damage.
- Dents in suitable aluminium panels.
- Dents caused by falling objects.
- Shallow dents where the paint remains intact.
Size alone isn’t the only determining factor as a larger but more shallow dent can sometimes be a better PDR candidate than a small but sharply creased dent. That’s why it’s always better to arrange a free, professional assessment.
Can PDR Fix Deep Dents?

In some instances, PDR can repair deeper dents, depending on the condition of the paint, the extent to which the metal has been stretched and the location of the damage.
A deep dent isn’t necessarily unsuitable for PDR, but sharply creased or heavily stretched metal can make a successful repair more difficult. This is why an individual assessment is important rather than judging suitability based on depth alone.
When Paintless Dent Repair May Not Be Suitable
PDR isn’t suitable for every type of damage.
In some cases, traditional body repair may be more appropriate, particularly where the paint or panel has suffered significant damage.
Here are just a few scenarios where PDR may not be suitable:
- Paint is cracked, chipped or peeling.
- The metal is severely stretched.
- There is significant damage to the panel.
- The dent has an extremely sharp crease.
- The damage is located in an area with limited access.
- The panel has previously undergone unsuitable bodywork or extensive filler.
- The dent affects a section of the vehicle where PDR tools cannot safely reach.
Does The Location Of The Dent Matter?
Yes. Where a dent is located can affect how straightforward it is to repair with PDR. Areas near edges, body lines or structural reinforcements can be more challenging because they may limit access or affect how the metal responds to repair.
Some panels also have multiple layers or restricted access behind the damage, making it harder for a technician to position their tools. Aluminium panels can require different techniques too, as the material behaves differently from steel.
PDR isn’t simply about pushing a dent out. A technician carefully manipulates the metal from behind using specialist tools, so the available access and construction of the panel are important factors when assessing whether PDR is suitable.
So, Can PDR Fix Every Dent?

No, PDR cannot fix every dent, but it can repair a wide range of common vehicle dents without the need for repainting.
The suitability of PDR depends on factors including the condition of the paint, depth and severity of the dent, the amount of metal movement and the location of the damage.
If you’re unsure whether your dent can be repaired using PDR, a professional assessment can provide a clear answer.

Related Questions
What dents cannot be repaired without paint?
Dents where the paint has cracked, chipped, or split cannot be repaired with PDR alone. Very sharp creases at the extreme edge of a panel, damage where the metal has been stretched excessively, and dents adjacent to structural welds may also require conventional repair. An honest assessment is always provided – if a dent is beyond PDR, we say so clearly.
The dent is near the edge of a panel – can you still reach it?
Dents close to panel edges can be challenging because access from behind is restricted. In many cases the technician can remove a trim strip, rubber seal, or adjacent panel to create access. Glue pull techniques using the Keco GPR system also allow repair from the outside of the panel where rod access is impossible. Each situation is assessed individually before work begins.
Do you come to my home or workplace?
Yes. Mobile PDR is available across a wide area of Lancashire, Greater Manchester, and Cheshire. Graham travels to wherever is most convenient for you, whether that is your driveway, your workplace car park, or a public location.
